Inspiration for most doom metal. It is amazing how this Swedish band did so much with just basic guitar riffs. Nothing fancy here but they manage to achieve immortality with this record. Their contemporaries (St Vitus Dance and Witchfinder General) were good but the atmosphere that Candlemass created is not something which can be replicated. This music was made with electric instruments but it feels very ancient, very medieval, if I may say so, it fits the 1400’s more than the past century. The vocals are clear and fit the riffs. Excellent. Some of the synth work (like the intro to Demon’s Gate) has not aged very well, but thankfully the synths are kept to a minimum while the the crushing guitar work takes precedence. This is one of the albums that are highly recommended to everyone, metal fan or no. A metal standard.
How does metal music feel so ancient and romantic? Pure gem of a metal record, here. Obviously Sabbath inspired but is in a class of its own. I would recommend a nice, cosy Lovecraft story to go along with this. ‘Nuff said.
Recommended Tracks – Solitude (not a cover of the Sabbath song by the same name. )
